Quiz - How you can know that you're a nerd like Ty

1. You have grammars for more than half-a-dozen languages and find it hard to be without them (even though you know that you don't have time to use them right now).

2. You can name two or more characters from the new Battlestar Galactica that appeared on Andromeda or Stargate: SG-1 as guest stars.

3. You can name three commonly accepted text types represented in the Pauline epistles and you can characterize each text type, but you know that the same groupings are not valid in the book of Revelation.

4. You bought a novel based on a comic book (i.e. The Death of Superman).

5. You find it very difficult to pass up a book that: was written by Paul Ricoeur, Robert Jordan, M.M. Bakhtin, Leo Strauss, or F.M. Cross; has the term Imagination, Fiction, Mars, Historiography, Philosophy of History, Dragon, Narrative, or Text in the title; takes place in the Star Wars universe; has a close connection to the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies or the Studies and Documents series.

6. You feel ashamed that you do not own a book by Hayden White, Gayatri Spivak, or Martin Heidegger.

7. You have read more than 50 books in one Sci-Fi/ fantasy series (for me, Star Wars, others may include Dragon Lance, or Star Trek).

8. You have had to quit reading a book because the grammar was so deplorable.

9. You resonate with Daniel Jackson in SG-1, Seamus Harper in Andromeda, Augur in Earth: Final Conflict, but you sometimes feel embarrassed watching Law and Order: Criminal Intent, or CSI because you're afraid that others see you as Goren or Grissom.

10. You've been in more than one argument about Einstein's theories.

11. You think that Lexa Doig is more believable as a human when she is playing the role of an android than when she plays a doctor (and you get the references).

12. You laughed your tail off when you saw Patrick McKenna from The Red Green Show on Star Gate: SG-1, and really wished that they could have found a way for him to say, "Uncle Red, Uncle Red, Uncle Red," that would work with the rest of the dialogue.

Comments:
I think that it should be envisioned as a continuum. In other words, the initial question is not entirely valid. One cannot really know that one is a nerd like Ty, but if one were to search for an answer to that question, one would need to consider the criteria in this list. Any "correct" answer would indicate a certain affinity, the more answers that match, the greater the likelihood of similarity in nerdiness, though if one were to answer all questions the same way as Ty, there is no guarantee of absolute likeness, though there is a very high chance of correspondence in types of nerdiness. So I suppose that the proper way to define oneself, according to this test, is by number or fraction (i.e. Sharkdog is a 6, or Sharkdog meets half the criteria for likeness with Ty in nerdiness). Of course, because I am planning a part two (maybe more) along these lines, as more lists of criteria become available, one should be better able to judge one's nerdiness on the Ty Scale.

here's what I read, Ty:

blahblahblah Star Wars blahblahblahblah Star Gate:SG1 blah blah blah. Sorry. I do like the REAL first 3 SW movies though. And I like the SW kid. AND I did like SG1 because McGyver and that tall black gay man were in it. And I liked the movie because James Spader wasn't a serial rapist. But we can still be friends. I guess. Just don't bring your sister.... we don't see eye to eye on a few major things, so leave her at home. Thanks.

Arwen, shouldn't you be glad I'm not drooling over your men? That means I won't use my wiles to win them away from you. Breathe a deep sigh of relief, Dearest.

Ty, when my eyes stop being glazed over, I'll come back and call you the biggest nerd that ever lived.

I didn't even read the whole post, because I knew there is no one quite like you Ty! Long live the King.

You are the biggest nerd that ever lived.

That is all.

I got lost somewhere, not sure where though.

i like you Ty, despite this post... I like you.

Maybe I should have done this in the style of Jeff foxworthy, "If you have ever designed a circuit, you might be Ty. If you've ever read a book about the Septuagint for fun, you might be Ty. If you love reading Bakhtin, but recognize that his writing is a bit erratic, you might be Ty. If people praying in King James English annoy you because they use incorrect Elizabethian English grammar, you might be Ty. If you have ever read a book about math for fun, you might be Ty.

"

I was worried their for a moment but #2 saved me. I have never seen SG-1 :-)

But I do own two books by Heidegger and three by Galileo who did not make your list :(

is it wrong that my eyes glaze at your second comment Ty?

oh well. I like you anyways.

Gina. it is settled. We can be friends again.

Hey Ty, I think you'll find this series over at Slate to be at least mildly interesting.

It's basically a guy who was raised jewish and even attended a christian high school but who has never read the bible. So he's reading it and blogging about it as he goes along.
